The night rating grants you the ability to fly during official night, as described by the Canadian Aviation Regulations. This rating is normally the first rating a Private Pilot will add to their licence. It is also included as part of the Commercial Pilot course if you pursue that route. Night flying is one of the best times to fly. It can often be calm, quiet, and peaceful. Even though the view may not be as good there are still many spectacular sights to see such as the city lights, or the stary sky.
PREREQUISITES
- The candidate must hold a Private Licence.
- A Recreational Pilot Permit does NOT qualify for the addition of a night rating.
REQUIREMENTS
Flight Training
- 15 Hours
- 10 hours dual, including 5 hours night training (2 of which are cross country).
- 5 hours solo at night.
- 5 hours instrument training. Note that the total requirement for instrument time is 10 hours. You gain 5 hours of credit from the completion of your Private Pilot course.
Ground School
There is no ground school requirement for this licence however there will be some studying that will be accompanied by the flight training.
Exam
There is no exam requirement for this rating
COURSE LENGTH
This is a quick rating to obtain. If you fly full time and have great weather you could get it done within a week. If you do it part-time it will take longer. The best time to obtain this rating, especially in the prairies where it can be daylight until 11:00 pm, is during the winter months.
COST
A night rating will cost about $4000. As with any flight training, this cost could go up or down depending on individual student circumstances.
